**LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT**

EPIC to Hold DC March for Teachers

On October 18th, 2008, EPIC, a not for profit group that was founded to give power to teachers, is holding a march in Washington, DC. They have already signed up hundreds of teachers and NAPTA is hoping that many of our members will attend and help make this march a powerful statement about the situation in which teachers find themselves. Before the march, there will be speakers as described at EPIC website - which include the well known education activist John Gatto.

Myra Sawyers, the founder of this group, has arranged for housing for 20 NAPTA teachers. The first 20 who sign up and request a place to stay will be able to avoid the cost of a hotel. I am hoping that those of you who live near Washington, DC will attend also.

Teachers needing anonymity can march and listen to the speeches with bags over their heads, which will serve both to protect their identity as well as show the public just how bad things are for teachers. So please do not hesitate to participate because you are afraid of losing your job. It is time this country was shamed over how teachers are treated. We all know that powerlessness has become teacher abuse and we need to make public statements to force it to stop not just for teachers, but for all who lose in these dysfunctional schools. We need to force the media to take this on; a well attended march along with some powerful speeches will get the attention we need.

The U.S. Department of Education has released proposed regulations for Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT (IDEA).  The most important change in these regulations is to limit the use of lay advocates in due process hearings, if this regulation goes through, parents will have limited options for representation of their child’s case.  Use our pre-formatted letter and tell Secretary Spelling to withdraw the proposed changes TODAY!

Our Mission:

We are a proactive National Org. comprised,of-State,County,

& Local community chapters:

We promote transparency and fiscal responsibility, as well as compliance with-State,&,Federal mandated regulations within all school districts. The ultimate aim of which is the overall elimination of red tape and wasteful spending while concurrently promoting safety in all our schools. We are  a progressive outlet committed to amplifying the voices of everyday people. Our organization involves volunteer participants and allied collectives organized along the principles of open and transparent decision-making processes, open public meetings and forums, and consensus building. The price of ignorance is extremely high! For that reason, we remain committed to being ever vigilant and watchful.

History:

SchoolWatch, originally a school advocacy group with interests primarily in special education, has quickly become a driving force for change in school districts in many states and across America. We are keeping ours eyes on school spending and making it our business to point out waste, mismanagement, and abuse in hopes that the schools, District Offices, Boards of Education and the Teachers Union, get the message - WE NEED THE EDUCATION SYSTEM TO SUPPORT AND CONTRIBUTE, AND HOPEFULLY BETTER THE COMMUNITY, NOT BANKRUPT IT

 SchoolWatch Fights for:
  • •The entire community – not just special interests!
  • Transparency and fiscal responsibility in schools
  • •Educational  and Property Tax reform
  • •Fair contract negotiations in collective bargaining situations
  • •Adequate funding for State mandated services
  • •Alternatives to property taxation in funding of schools
  • •Students to receive free appropriate educations
  • •Safe schools and healthy educational environments
  • •Uncovering school waste and mismanagement, corruption, and fraud
